Bee Friendly Status

Published: 19 September 2018

The Community Council has been successful in its application to Welsh Government to achieve Bee Friendly status for Hirwaun and Penderyn. In order to accomplish this, we had to achieve a number of objectives which were then assessed by an independent assessor. Our successful application was given on the basis that: i) our flower baskets have been extended this year, and are a haven for pollinators such as bees, hoverflys and other insects, ii) we added the 3 tiered planters which also attract the same pollinators, iii) we asked Hirwaun and Penderyn Primary Schools to enter bug hotels into our annual Garden Show, and these bug hotels are now back on school grounds encouraging pollinators there, iv) we held a seed bomb making session for local children who were able to take the bee friendly seed bombs home to plant, providing food for pollinators, and finally v) we added a Best Bee Friendly garden category to our Hirwaun & Penderyn in Bloom competition to encourage residents to get involved in protecting the bees. We will continue our work by expanding on these projects next year.
