Bee Friendly Status 2019
Published: 11 September 2019
The Community Council has been successful in its application to Welsh Government to achieve Bee Friendly status for Hirwaun and Penderyn for a second year. In order to accomplish this, we had to achieve a number of objectives which were then assessed by an independent assessor. Our successful application was given on the basis that: i) our flower baskets and planters are a haven for pollinators such as bees, hoverflys and other insects, ii) we asked Hirwaun and Penderyn Primary Schools to enter wild flower and tree collages into our Garden Show iii) we held a seed bomb making session for the second year for local children who were able to take the bee friendly seed bombs home to plant, providing food for pollinators, along with bumble bee related crafts and a talk from a local bee keeper, and finally iv) in addition to Best Bee Friendly Front Garden in our Hirwaun & Penderyn in Bloom competition, we added a Best Bee Friendly Back garden category to encourage residents to get involved in protecting the bees.
We will continue our work by expanding on these projects next year.
